Svolvær, Suolvearra (Northern Sami), or Spålavuolle (Lule Sami) is a town and the administrative centre of Vågan Municipality in Nordland County, Norway. It is located on the island of Austvågøya in the Lofoten archipelago, along the Vestfjorden. The 2.36-square-kilometre (580-acre) town has a population (2023) of 4,736 and a population density of 2,007 inhabitants per square kilometre (5,200/sq mi).
As you step into Svolvær, the first thing that strikes you is the stunning landscape that surrounds the town. The towering peaks of the Lofoten mountains form a dramatic backdrop to the town, while the crystal-clear waters of the Norwegian Sea lap at its shores. The town itself is a colorful jumble of wooden houses, fishing boats, and bustling cafes and restaurants.
One of the must-see attractions in Svolvær is the Lofoten War Memorial Museum, which tells the story of the German occupation of the islands during World War II. The museum is housed in a former military barracks and features exhibits on the war, as well as displays on the local fishing industry.
