Amsterdam is the capital and largest city of the Netherlands. As of 1 January 2026, it had a population of 941,873 within the city proper, 1,457,018 in the urban area and 2,480,394 in the metropolitan area. Located in the Dutch province of North Holland, Amsterdam is colloquially referred to as the "Venice of the North", for its large number of canals, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

One of the first things you'll notice about Amsterdam is its incredible canal network. The city is known as the "Venice of the North" and for good reason. With more than 100 kilometers of canals, Amsterdam is famous for its picturesque waterways. You can take a boat trip along the canals and see the city from a different perspective, or simply stroll along the banks and admire the stunning views.

As well as its canals, Amsterdam is also home to some of the most beautiful architecture in Europe. From the Gothic-style Old Church to the iconic Rijksmuseum, the city is bursting with historic buildings that will take your breath away. One of the most famous landmarks in Amsterdam is the Anne Frank House, which is a must-visit for anyone interested in the history of World War II.
