Abu Simbel is a historic site comprising two massive rock-cut temples in the village of Abu Simbel, Aswan Governorate, Upper Egypt, near the border with Sudan. It is located on the western bank of Lake Nasser, about 230 km (140 mi) southwest of Aswan. Its latitude of 22° 20′ 13″ N is 1.0978°, which are 122 km, south of the tropic of Cancer.
As soon as you arrive in Abu Simbel, you'll be in awe of the impressive temples that dominate the landscape. The complex consists of two temples, the Great Temple of Ramses II and the Temple of Hathor. Both temples were carved directly into the mountainside, and their grandeur and intricate details are still visible today.
The Great Temple of Ramses II is the main attraction of Abu Simbel, and it's easy to see why. The temple's facade features four colossal statues of Ramses II, each standing at a height of 20 meters. The interior of the temple is just as impressive, with intricate carvings and paintings that tell the stories of Ramses II's military victories and religious beliefs.
