Leiden is a city and municipality in the province of South Holland, Netherlands. The municipality of Leiden has a population of 127,046, but the city forms one densely connected agglomeration with its suburbs Oegstgeest, Leiderdorp, Voorschoten and Zoeterwoude with 215,602 inhabitants. The Netherlands Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) further includes Katwijk in the agglomeration which makes the total population of the Leiden urban agglomeration 282,207. Further, Teylingen, Noordwijk, and Noordwijkerhout are included in the larger Leiden urban area, which has 365,913 inhabitants. Leiden is located on the Oude Rijn, at a distance of some 20 km (12 mi) from The Hague to its south and some 40 km (25 mi) from Amsterdam to its north. The recreational area of the Kaag Lakes (Kagerplassen) lies just to the northeast of Leiden.

As you wander through the streets of Leiden, you'll notice the stunning buildings that date back to the 16th and 17th centuries. The city is home to some of the most beautiful architecture in Europe, with its historic center being a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Take a stroll through the streets and admire the intricate details of each building, from the grandeur of the Stadhuis to the cozy facades of the residential areas.

Leiden is also famous for its canals, which are just as beautiful as those in Amsterdam but with fewer crowds. You can take a boat tour and explore the city from a different perspective, or simply walk along the canal banks and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere. Make sure to visit the Rapenburg Canal, which is lined with stunning houses and the University of Leiden.
