Discover Bacalar

Photos, information and travel guides for your stay.

Bacalar is the municipal seat and largest city in Bacalar Municipality in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, about 40 kilometres (25 mi) north of Chetumal. In the 2010 census the city had a population of 11,084. At that time it was still part of Othón P. Blanco, and was its second-largest city (locality), after Chetumal.

Known as the "Lagoon of Seven Colors," Bacalar is a natural wonder that boasts stunning shades of blue and green. The lagoon is home to a unique ecosystem with numerous underwater caves and cenotes, making it a perfect spot for snorkeling or diving. You can also paddle board, kayak, or take a boat tour to explore the different parts of the lagoon.

Aside from the lagoon, Bacalar also has a rich history that can be seen through its architecture and landmarks. The San Felipe Fort, built in 1729, is a military fortress that was used to protect the town from pirates and invaders. It's now a museum that offers a glimpse into the town's past. The Bacalar Museum, located in the town center, showcases the area's pre-Hispanic and colonial history.
