Discover Sisal

Photos, information and travel guides for your stay.

Sisal is a species of flowering plant native to southern Mexico, but widely cultivated and naturalized in many other countries. It yields a stiff leaf fiber used in making rope and various other products. The sisal fiber is traditionally used for rope and twine, and has many other uses, including cloth, footwear, hats, bags, carpets, geotextiles, and dartboards. It is also used as fiber reinforcements for composite fiberglass, rubber, and concrete products. Like other agaves, the pith of the leaves can be fermented and distilled to make mezcal.

Sisal was once a significant port for the Yucatan Peninsula during the 18th and 19th centuries, and it still retains much of its colonial charm. The town is situated on the Gulf of Mexico and boasts stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, and a laid-back atmosphere that will make YOU fall in love with this hidden gem.

One of the most popular attractions in Sisal is its lighthouse, which offers breathtaking views of the town, the sea, and the surrounding mangroves. YOU can climb to the top of the lighthouse and take in the panoramic vistas or explore the nearby mangrove forests by boat.
