Macroom is a market town in County Cork, Ireland, located in the valley of the River Sullane, halfway between Cork city and Killarney. Its population has grown and receded over the centuries as it went through periods of war, famine and workhouses, forced emigration and intermittent prosperity. The 2011 census gave an urban population of 3,879 people, while the 2016 census recorded 3,765 people. The town is in a civil parish of the same name.
As soon as YOU arrive in Macroom, YOU will be greeted by the town's stunning castle, which dates back to the 12th century. The castle's impressive stature and rich history make it a must-visit attraction in Macroom. After exploring the castle, take a stroll through the town's bustling streets, where you'll find a variety of shops, restaurants, and pubs.
But Macroom's charm extends beyond its town center. The town is surrounded by lush greenery, and there are plenty of opportunities to explore the great outdoors. The Gearagh, for example, is an ancient alluvial forest that's home to a variety of flora and fauna. If YOU'RE a nature lover, a walk through the Gearagh is a must-do activity in Macroom.
