Chengde, formerly known as Jehol and Rehe, is a prefecture-level city in Hebei province, situated about 225 kilometres (140 mi) northeast of Beijing. It is best known as the site of the Mountain Resort, a vast imperial garden and palace formerly used by the Qing emperors as summer residence. Its local dialect is also known for being the closest to Standard Chinese. The permanent resident population is approximately 3,473,200 in 2017. At the end of 2024, the total resident population of the city was 3,285,700, a decrease of 16,500 from the end of the previous year. The urbanization rate of the resident population is 59.77%.

One of the city's most famous attractions is the Chengde Mountain Resort, a vast imperial palace complex that served as the summer retreat for the Qing dynasty emperors. The resort features a variety of pavilions, gardens, and lakes, all set against the backdrop of the rolling mountains.

But Chengde is not just about imperial grandeur - the city also has a thriving Buddhist culture, with several temples and monasteries scattered throughout its landscape. One of the most notable is the Puning Temple, which houses a majestic statue of the bodhisattva Avalokitesvara.
