トーキー は、映像と音声が同期した映画のこと。サイレント映画（無声映画）の対義語として「トーキー映画」と呼ばれることもあるが冗語である。無声映画の対義語としては「発声映画」と呼ばれる。「サイレント映画」が廃れて音声が同期した映画が一般的となってからは、あえて「トーキー」と呼ぶことはなくなっている。発声映画が最初に上映されたのは1900年のパリでのことだったが、商業的に成り立つにはさらに10年以上を要した。当初は映画フィルムとは別にレコード盤に録音したものを使っていたため同期が難しく、しかも録音や再生の音質も不十分だった。サウンドカメラの発明によって同期が簡単になり、1923年4月にニューヨークで世界で初めてその技術を使った短編映画が一般上映された。
