Daugavpils is a state city in southeastern Latvia, located on the banks of the Daugava River, from which the city derives its name. The parts of the city to the north of the river belong to the historical Latvian region of Latgale, and those to the south lie in Selonia. It is the second-largest city in the country after the capital Riga, which is located some 230 kilometres northwest and is the ninth most populous city in the Baltic states. In addition to being a state city with its own municipality, the administration of the surrounding Augšdaugava Municipality is located in Daugavpils as well.
Daugavpils was established in the early 17th century and has since undergone many transformations. Today, the city boasts a unique blend of architectural styles, including Gothic, Baroque, and Art Nouveau. One of the most prominent landmarks in Daugavpils is the Daugavpils Fortress, which dates back to the early 19th century. This massive structure houses several museums, art galleries, and exhibition halls, making it a popular destination for tourists.
In addition to its historical attractions, Daugavpils is also known for its vibrant cultural scene. The city is home to several theaters, concert halls, and art centers, which showcase the talents of local and international artists. One of the most popular events in Daugavpils is the annual Mark Rothko Art Center Festival, which celebrates the life and work of the famous Latvian-American artist.
