Uppuveli is a gold sand coastal resort town of the Trincomalee District, Sri Lanka located in the suburb of Sambalativu, 6 km northwest of the city of Trincomalee. A historically popular tourist destination of the island alongside the nearby Nilaveli, the numbers of visitors declined following the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami and Sri Lankan Civil War, but have risen again since 2010. It is home to the Salli Muthumariamman Kovil on its coast.
As you step into Uppuveli, you'll immediately notice the crystal-clear blue waters of the Indian Ocean. The beach stretches for miles, offering breathtaking views and a perfect spot to relax and soak up the sun. The beach is also home to a variety of water sports such as surfing, snorkeling, and diving. If you're feeling adventurous, you can take a boat tour to nearby Pigeon Island, where you can witness the beauty of the coral reefs and swim with sea turtles.
Apart from the beach, Uppuveli is also home to a number of historical sites. The Koneswaram Temple, located on a rocky outcrop overlooking the ocean, dates back to the 3rd century BCE and is considered one of the most sacred Hindu temples in Sri Lanka. You can also explore the British-built Fort Frederick, which was built in the 17th century and is now a popular tourist attraction.
