Photos, information and travel guides for your stay.

Curral das Freiras is a civil parish in the municipality of Câmara de Lobos in the Portuguese archipelago of Madeira. The population in 2011 was 2,001, in an area of 25.03 km2. It is situated in the mountainous interior of the island. Being one of the more distant locations from the municipal seat of Câmara de Lobos, it is geographically isolated from other communities by the cliffs and peaks surrounding its central valley. A tunnel southwards in the direction of Funchal, which opened in 2004, now offers safe access to the valley and the dangerous historical route has been abandoned.

Curral das Freiras, which translates to “Nun’s Valley,” is surrounded by towering mountains and lush vegetation, creating a stunning backdrop for your holiday. The village itself is small, with narrow streets and traditional houses, providing a glimpse into the authentic Madeiran way of life.

As you explore the village, make sure to visit the 18th-century church of Nossa Senhora do Livramento, which boasts a beautiful baroque altar. For a taste of local cuisine, head to one of the village’s restaurants and try the traditional espetada, a skewered meat dish served with bread and salad.
