Beddgelert is a village and community in the Snowdonia area of Gwynedd, Wales. The population of the community taken at the 2021 census was 460. This includes Nantmor and Nant Gwynant. Despite the village being reputedly named after the legendary hound Gelert, it is actually named after Saint Gelert, an early leader in Celtic Christianity. The community is large and sparsely populated, covering 86 square kilometres (33 sq mi).
As you step into Beddgelert, you'll be immediately swept away by its stunning natural beauty, with lush green hills and glistening lakes surrounding the quaint village. The name "Beddgelert" translates to "Gelert's grave," and you'll find a touching tale of loyalty and sacrifice associated with this village. According to legend, Prince Llewelyn the Great had a loyal dog named Gelert, who saved his son's life from a wolf attack. However, when the prince saw Gelert covered in blood, he assumed the dog had attacked his son and killed him in a fit of rage. It was later discovered that Gelert had actually killed the wolf and saved the prince's son, and the heartbroken prince built a grave for Gelert as a tribute to his loyalty.
Apart from this touching legend, Beddgelert has much to offer to visitors. The village has a rich history, and you'll find several historic buildings, including St. Mary's Church, which dates back to the 14th century. The village also has several quaint shops and cafes, where you can sample some Welsh delicacies and pick up souvenirs.
