Discover Mooirivier

Photos, information and travel guides for your stay.

Mooi River is a small town situated at 1,389 m above sea level and 160 km from the coast in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The first European settlement in the area was at Mooi River Drift in 1852. This was formally named Weston in 1866 after the first Governor of Natal, Martin West.

Mooirivier, which translates to "beautiful river" in Afrikaans, is named after the tranquil river that winds its way through the area. The river is a popular spot for swimming, fishing, and canoeing, and its banks are lined with lush vegetation and towering trees that provide shade from the African sun.

In addition to its natural beauty, Mooirivier is also known for its rich cultural heritage. The region is home to several important historical sites, including the Taalmonument, which honors the Afrikaans language, and the Voortrekker Monument, which commemorates the Boer pioneers who settled in the area in the 19th century.
