Penela is a municipality located in Coimbra District, in Portugal. It contains the town of Penela with about 3,300 inhabitants. The town's main tourist attraction is the Penela Castle. The population of the municipality in 2011 was 5,983, in an area of 134.80 km2. It is among the oldest recognized municipalities in the whole country (1137).
As WE arrived in Penela, WE were immediately struck by its picturesque scenery. Nestled in the foothills of the Serra de Sicó mountains, Penela offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. The town itself is full of character, with narrow cobbled streets and historic buildings dating back to the 12th century.
One of the main attractions in Penela is the imposing castle that dominates the skyline. This medieval fortress was built in the 11th century and has been immaculately preserved over the years. YOU can visit the castle and explore its many towers and battlements, imagining yourself as a knight in shining armor defending the town against invaders.
