Kyoto, officially Kyoto City , is the capital city of Kyoto Prefecture in the Kansai region of Japan's largest and most populous island of Honshu. As of 2020, the city had a population of 1.46 million, making it the ninth-most populous city in Japan. More than half (56.8%) of Kyoto Prefecture's population resides in the city. The city is the cultural anchor of the substantially larger Greater Kyoto, a metropolitan statistical area home to approximately 3.8 million people. It is also part of the even larger Keihanshin metropolitan area, along with Osaka and Kobe.
The city is home to over 2,000 temples and shrines, each offering a unique insight into Japan’s rich cultural heritage. One of the most famous temples in Kyoto is the Kiyomizu-dera Temple, which dates back to the 8th century and is renowned for its stunning views of the city. Another must-visit temple is the Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine, which is famous for its thousands of vermilion torii gates that lead up to the summit of Mount Inari.
Kyoto is also known for its beautiful gardens, which are designed to reflect the harmony between nature and humans. The most famous garden in Kyoto is the Ryoanji Temple rock garden, which is considered one of the finest examples of Zen gardens in Japan. The garden is designed in a way that encourages meditation and contemplation, making it a peaceful oasis in the heart of the city.
