Its historic center is characterized by narrow streets and colorful houses, while its modern areas offer a wide range of leisure and cultural activities. This city is famous for its connection to the sea, as it is located at the mouth of the Lima river and the Atlantic Ocean. In fact, the city's symbol is the "Gil Eannes" ship, a former hospital vessel that is now a museum.
One of the must-see attractions in Viana do Castelo is the Sanctuary of Santa Luzia, which is located on top of a hill and offers breathtaking views of the city and the surrounding landscape. Another highlight is the Praça da República, a beautiful square surrounded by elegant buildings, including the Town Hall and the former Misericórdia Hospital.
