Ravenna is the capital city of the Province of Ravenna, in the Emilia-Romagna region of Northern Italy. It was the capital city of the Western Roman Empire during the fifth century AD until its collapse in 476, after which it served as the capital of the Ostrogothic Kingdom and then the Byzantine Exarchate of Ravenna. From the 5th to the 8th century, Ravenna was the capital of the Western Roman Empire and later the Byzantine Empire in Italy. As a result, the city is home to some of the most stunning mosaics in the world, including those in the Basilica di San Vitale and the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia.
