Amritsar, also known as Ambarsar, is the second-largest city in the Indian state of Punjab, after Ludhiana. Located in the Majha region, it is a major cultural, transportation and economic centre. The city is the administrative headquarters of the Amritsar district. It is situated 217 km (135 mi) north-west of Chandigarh, and 455 km (283 mi) north-west of New Delhi. It is 28 km (17.4 mi) from the India-Pakistan border, and 47 km (29 mi) north-east of Lahore, Pakistan.

Amritsar is perhaps best known for its iconic Golden Temple, which is also known as Harmandir Sahib. This magnificent shrine is the holiest site for the Sikh religion and attracts millions of visitors from around the world each year. The Golden Temple is a stunning sight to behold, especially at night when it is beautifully illuminated.

Beyond the Golden Temple, Amritsar offers a wealth of other cultural and historical attractions. A visit to the Jallianwala Bagh memorial site is a must for history buffs. This site commemorates the tragic massacre that took place here in 1919, when British troops opened fire on unarmed civilians who had gathered for a peaceful protest.
