Þykkvibær, also known as Þykkvabær, is a village in South Iceland, part of the municipality of Rangárþing ytra. It is the oldest rural village in Iceland. As of January 2021 there are 79 inhabitants.
One of the main attractions in Þykkvibær is the nearby volcano, Hekla. Known as the "Gateway to Hell" in medieval times, Hekla is now one of Iceland's most popular hiking destinations. The trail to the top of the volcano is challenging, but the views are absolutely breathtaking. On a clear day, you can see all the way to the Westman Islands, another stunning destination in Iceland.
