The settlement is 500 m (1,600 ft) above sea level, and is located 25 km (16 mi) from Ranfurly, via the Ida Valley - Omakau Road and State Highway 85. One of the highlights of Oturehua is its historic railway station, which dates back to the early 1900s. The station has been lovingly restored and now houses a café, gift shop, and museum. You can take a ride on one of the vintage trains that run from the station, passing through stunning scenery and historic tunnels.
For a taste of rural New Zealand life, head to the nearby Hayes Engineering Works and Homestead. This 19th-century farmstead has been preserved as a museum, showcasing the ingenuity and hard work of the early settlers who made their home in the area.
