Bitung, officially the City of Bitung, is a coastal city at the north-eastern edge of the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia. Bitung is located in the province of North Sulawesi, and faces Lembeh Island, and the Lembeh Strait, which is known for its colourful marine life, in particular sea slugs. Bitung has a population of 187,932 at the 2010 Census, making it the second most populated city in the province after the capital Manado, rising to 225,134 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2025 was 217,504.
Bitung is a hidden gem that is often overlooked by tourists, but it is a destination that should not be missed. This city is famous for its stunning natural beauty, diverse marine life, and rich cultural heritage. It is a perfect place for those who want to explore the less-traveled path and immerse themselves in the local way of life.
One of the main attractions of Bitung is its marine biodiversity. The city is home to the Bunaken National Marine Park, which is considered one of the best diving spots in Indonesia. The park boasts crystal-clear waters, colorful corals, and a variety of marine species, including sea turtles, sharks, and dolphins. If you are not into diving, you can still enjoy the beauty of the underwater world by snorkeling or taking a glass-bottom boat tour.
