Discover Macedon

Photos, information and travel guides for your stay.

Macedonia, also called Macedon, was an ancient kingdom on the periphery of Archaic and Classical Greece, which later became the dominant state of Hellenistic Greece. The kingdom was founded and initially ruled by the royal Argead dynasty, which was followed by the Antipatrid and Antigonid dynasties. Home to the ancient Macedonians, the earliest kingdom was centred on the northeastern part of the Greek peninsula, and bordered by Epirus to the southwest, Illyria to the northwest, Paeonia to the north, Thrace to the east and Thessaly to the south.

As you explore the town, you'll be captivated by its stunning landscapes. The Macedon Ranges is home to Mount Macedon, a mountain that rises to an elevation of 1,001 meters above sea level. The mountain offers breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside, and it's a popular destination for bushwalking and hiking. You can also enjoy a picnic at the Hanging Rock Reserve where you'll be surrounded by an unusual rock formation.

Macedon is also rich in history. The town is home to numerous heritage-listed sites, including the stunning Memorial Cross which commemorates the soldiers who died in World War I. You can also visit the historic Macedon Railway Station, which was built in 1882 and is a testament to the town's fascinating railway history.
