Kerikeri is a town in the Bay of Islands, in the Far North District of the North Island of New Zealand. It lies at the head of Kerikeri Inlet, a northwestern arm of the Bay of Islands, where fresh water of the Kerikeri River enters the Pacific Ocean. It is sometimes called the Cradle of the Nation, as it was the site of the first permanent Christian mission station in the country, and has some of the oldest buildings in the country. It is a rapidly expanding centre of subtropical and allied horticulture.
Kerikeri is known for its subtropical climate and stunning landscape, which features rolling hills, lush forests, and sparkling rivers. This beautiful setting is perfect for outdoor adventurers, who can enjoy activities like hiking, kayaking, and fishing. In fact, the Kerikeri River is a popular spot for fly fishing, with abundant trout and other species to catch.
But Kerikeri isn’t just for outdoor enthusiasts – it also boasts a rich cultural heritage. The town’s name means “dig dig” in Maori, reflecting its history as a site where Maori chiefs would dig for the coveted kumara (sweet potato) crop. The area was also home to one of the earliest European settlements in New Zealand, established by Anglican missionaries in 1819.
