Discover Rarotonga

Photos, information and travel guides for your stay.

Rarotonga is the largest and most populous island of the country of the Cook Islands. The island is volcanic, with an area of 67.39 km2 (26.02 sq mi), and is home to 72% of the country's population, with 10,898 of a total population of 15,040. Avarua, on the north coast, is the location of the Parliament buildings and the capital of the Cook Islands. The country's international airport is also in Avarua, and Rarotonga is a popular tourist destination, with many resorts, hotels and motels.

As soon as you step off the plane onto this small island, you'll feel a sense of tranquility wash over you. Rarotonga is a place where time seems to stand still, and the stresses of everyday life simply melt away. With its white sandy beaches, crystal clear waters and lush greenery, it's no wonder that Rarotonga is a popular spot for honeymooners, families and adventure seekers alike.

One of the top things to do on the island is to take a scenic walk or bike ride around the perimeter road. The road hugs the coast, offering stunning views of the turquoise lagoon and the jagged mountain peaks that rise up from the center of the island. You'll pass through sleepy villages, past fields of taro and pawpaw, and have the chance to stop and chat with the friendly locals.
