As of 2023, there were 171,665 inhabitants in the metropolitan area of Chartres, 38,324 of whom lived in the city (commune) of Chartres proper.
As you wander through the cobbled streets of Chartres, you'll immediately be transported back in time to the medieval era. The town's most iconic landmark is the Chartres Cathedral, which dates back to the 12th century and is famous for its intricate Gothic architecture. The stunning stained glass windows are a sight to behold, and the intricate carvings on the exterior of the building are a testament to the skill of the craftsmen who built it.
Aside from the cathedral, Chartres is also home to a number of other beautiful churches and chapels, including the Saint-Pierre Church and the Sainte-Foy Church. If you're interested in history, a visit to the Chartres Museum is a must. Here, you can learn about the town's rich past and see artifacts dating back to the Roman era.
