Photos, information and travel guides for your stay.

Merthyr Tydfil is the main town in Merthyr Tydfil County Borough, Wales, administered by Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council. It is about 23 miles (37 km) north of Cardiff. Often called just Merthyr, it is said to be named after Tydfil, daughter of King Brychan of Brycheiniog, who according to legend was slain at Merthyr by pagans about 480 CE. Merthyr generally means "martyr" in modern Welsh, but here closer to the Latin martyrium: a place of worship built over a martyr's relics. Similar place names in south Wales are Merthyr Cynog, Merthyr Dyfan and Merthyr Mawr.

Once a thriving center of iron production in the 19th century, Merthyr Tydfil offers a glimpse into the industrial revolution that shaped the world as we know it today. You can explore the town's past by visiting the Cyfarthfa Castle Museum and Art Gallery, which showcases the town's industrial heritage. You'll also find a range of interactive exhibits, including a recreated ironworks and a coal mine, that give YOU a hands-on experience of what life was like for workers in the past.

Merthyr Tydfil is also surrounded by beautiful countryside, making it the perfect destination for outdoor enthusiasts. You can take a stroll through the picturesque Taf Fechan Nature Reserve, which is home to a variety of flora and fauna, or head to the Brecon Beacons National Park for some more challenging hikes. The park is also a designated Dark Sky Reserve, providing a perfect opportunity for stargazing on a clear night.
