It is Fujian's most populous metropolitan region, with an area of 11,245 square kilometers (4,342 sq mi) and a population of 8,782,285 as of the 2020 census. Its built-up area is home to 6,669,711 inhabitants, encompassing the Licheng, Fengze, and Luojiang urban districts; Jinjiang, Nan'an, and Shishi cities; Hui'an County; and the Quanzhou District for Taiwanese Investment. As you explore Quanzhou, you'll be transported back in time to the ancient Maritime Silk Road, where traders from all over the world came to exchange goods and ideas. The city boasts a plethora of historical sites, such as the Kaiyuan Temple, which was built over 1,300 years ago and is considered one of the most important Buddhist temples in China.
Aside from its rich history, Quanzhou is also known for its distinctive architectural style, influenced by both Chinese and foreign cultures. The city's traditional southern Fujian-style buildings, with their red-brick walls and elegant roofs, are a sight to behold. One of the most famous examples is the Qingjing Mosque, the oldest Islamic temple in China, which features a blend of Chinese and Islamic architectural elements.
