Sohar, officially: Suhar, is the capital and largest city of the Al Batinah North Governorate in Oman. An ancient capital of the country that once served as an important Islamic port town on the Gulf of Oman, Sohar has also been credited as the mythical birthplace of Sinbad the Sailor. It was historically known as Mazūn (مَزُوْن).
As you wander through the streets of Sohar, you'll be struck by the blend of old and new. The city has a long and storied past, dating back to the third millennium BC. It was an important trading hub for centuries, and its strategic location on the coast made it a target for various invaders throughout history. Today, you can still see evidence of this heritage in the form of ancient ruins, forts, and other historic sites.
One of the most famous landmarks in Sohar is the Sohar Fort, which was built in the 13th century and served as a stronghold for the ruling Al Bu Said dynasty. The fort has been restored and is now open to the public, offering a glimpse into the city's rich history.
