Bandar Seri Begawan (BSB) is the capital and largest city of Brunei. It is officially a municipal area with an area of 100.36 square kilometres (38.75 sq mi) and has a population of 72,133 as of 2025 estimate. It is part of Brunei–Muara District, the smallest yet most populous district which is home to over 70 percent of the country's population. It is the country's largest urban centre and nominally the country's only city. The capital is home to Brunei's seat of government, as well as a commercial and cultural centre. It was formerly known as Brunei Town until it was renamed in 1970 in honour of Omar Ali Saifuddien III, the 28th Sultan of Brunei and the father of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah.
As you explore Bandar Seri Begawan, you'll notice its rich Islamic heritage reflected in its many mosques and Islamic-inspired buildings. The iconic Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, named after the country's former sultan, is one of the city's most popular attractions. Its stunning golden dome, marble minarets, and serene lagoon make it a must-visit destination.
Another impressive mosque is the Jame'Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque, which is considered one of the largest mosques in Southeast Asia. This grand mosque features intricate carvings, vibrant mosaics, and a beautiful gold dome. You can also visit the Royal Regalia Museum, which houses a collection of artifacts and exhibits related to the royal family of Brunei.
