Photos, information and travel guides for your stay.

Banská Štiavnica is a town in central Slovakia, in the middle of an immense caldera created by the collapse of an ancient volcano. For its size, the caldera is known as the Štiavnica Mountains. Banská Štiavnica has a population of less than 10,000. The town was an important medieval mining centre. The surviving urban centre was formed during the 16th century. Because of their historical value, the town and its surroundings were proclaimed by the UNESCO to be a World Heritage Site on December 11, 1993.

Banská Štiavnica was once a hub for silver mining during the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and remnants of this industry can still be seen throughout the town. The Old Castle, built in the 13th century, offers breathtaking views of the surrounding hills and valleys, while the New Castle, constructed in the 16th century, houses a museum dedicated to the town's mining history.

Aside from its historic landmarks, Banská Štiavnica is also known for its picturesque streets and traditional architecture. Take a stroll through the historic center to admire the colorful buildings and charming courtyards, or visit the Holy Trinity Square to see the iconic plague column and the impressive St. Catherine Church.
