Discover Savannah

Photos, information and travel guides for your stay.

A savanna or savannah is a mixed woodland-grassland biome and ecosystem characterised by the trees being sufficiently widely spaced so that the canopy does not close. The open canopy allows sufficient light to reach the ground to support an unbroken herbaceous layer consisting primarily of grasses. Four savanna forms exist; savanna woodland, where trees and shrubs form a light canopy; tree savanna, with scattered trees and shrubs; shrub savanna, with distributed shrubs; and grass savanna, where trees and shrubs are mostly nonexistent.

As you walk through the streets, you'll be transported back in time with the city's well-preserved antebellum architecture, complete with wrought-iron balconies and cobblestone streets. Savannah also boasts a thriving arts scene, with numerous galleries and museums to explore.

If you're a history buff, you'll love the city's many museums and landmarks, including the Telfair Museums, the Savannah History Museum, and the Bonaventure Cemetery. You can also take a tour of the city's historic homes, including the Mercer-Williams House, made famous by the book and movie "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil."
