Pliska was the first capital of the First Bulgarian Empire during the Middle Ages and is now a small town in Shumen Province, on the Ludogorie plateau of the Danubian Plain, 20 km northeast of the provincial capital, Shumen.
Pliska was the capital of Bulgaria from 681 to 893 AD and is now an important archaeological site. It is located in the northeast of the country, near the city of Shumen. The site is spread over a large area, and WE recommend spending at least a day exploring all of its fascinating ruins and landmarks.
One of the most impressive structures in Pliska is the Great Basilica, which was built in the 9th century. Its remains are a testament to the grandeur and sophistication of the First Bulgarian Empire.
