Charlottetown is the capital and largest city of the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island, and the county seat of Queens County. Named after Queen Charlotte, Charlottetown was an unincorporated town until it was incorporated as a city in 1855.
Charlottetown is known as the Birthplace of Confederation, as it was here that the Fathers of Confederation gathered in 1864 to discuss the creation of a new country. You can visit the Confederation Centre of the Arts, a cultural center built in honor of this historic event, to learn more about the formation of Canada.
Aside from its rich history, Charlottetown also boasts stunning natural scenery. The city is surrounded by water, with the Hillsborough River on one side and the Northumberland Strait on the other. Take a stroll along the waterfront boardwalk to take in the sights. You can even go on a boat tour to see the city from a different perspective.
