Nakhon Si Thammarat is a city municipality in Mueang Nakhon Si Thammarat district, the capital of Nakhon Si Thammarat province, in the south of Thailand. It is about 610 km (380 mi) south of Bangkok, on the east coast of the Malay Peninsula. The city was the administrative centre of Southern Thailand during most of its history. Originally, a coastal city, silting moved the coastline away from the city. The city has a much larger north to south extension than west to east, which dates back to its original location on a flood-safe dune. The modern city centre on the train station is north of Old Town. As of 2019, the city had a population of 102,152.
Nakhon Si Thammarat is a province that boasts a rich history and cultural heritage. The city of Nakhon Si Thammarat, the provincial capital, is one of the oldest cities in Thailand, with a history dating back over 1,000 years. It was once an important center of the Srivijaya Empire, a powerful maritime kingdom that controlled much of Southeast Asia.
Today, Nakhon Si Thammarat is a thriving city that offers visitors a unique glimpse into Thailand's past and present. One of the most popular attractions in the city is the Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan, a magnificent temple that dates back to the 13th century. The temple is home to a towering chedi (stupa) that is said to contain a relic of the Buddha's tooth.
