Termez is the capital of Surxondaryo Region in southern Uzbekistan. Administratively, it is a district-level city. Its population is 182,800 (2021). It is notable as the site of Alexander the Great's city Alexandria on the Oxus, as a center of early Buddhism, as a site of Muslim pilgrimage, and as a base of Soviet Union military operations in Afghanistan, accessible via the nearby Hairatan border crossing.
As soon as YOU step foot in Termiz, YOU will be transported back in time. The city is rich in history and culture, with archaeological sites dating back to the 2nd century BC. Termiz was a major center of Buddhism and Islam, and it played a significant role in the Silk Road trade.
One of the most striking landmarks in Termiz is the Kokildor-Ota Khanaka. This ancient structure served as a caravanserai for traders traveling along the Silk Road. It's an impressive sight, with its intricate brickwork and detailed carvings. The Sulayman-Too Hill is another must-see attraction in Termiz. This sacred site is considered to be one of the holiest places in Uzbekistan, and it's believed that the prophet Solomon once visited the area.
