Kohunlích is an archeological site located in the southern part of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. The site is believed to have been inhabited from around 200 BC to 1200 AD, during the Mayan Classic Period. The ruins consist of over 200 buildings, including temples, palaces, and residences, all intricately designed and constructed with limestone blocks.
One of the most impressive structures at Kohunlích is the Temple of the Masks. This temple is named after the large stone masks that adorn the facade of the building. The masks depict a Mayan ruler, and it is believed that the temple was used for important ceremonies and rituals. Another must-see structure is the Palace of the Stuccos, which features intricate stucco decorations on its walls.
As WE wander through the ruins, YOU will notice the unique fusion of Mayan and Toltec styles in the architecture. The Toltec influence is particularly evident in the use of columns and the design of the buildings. The site also features a number of ball courts, which were used for the popular Mayan sport of Pok-Ta-Pok.
