The town is 15 miles (24 km) north of Newcastle upon Tyne, west of the A189 and bordered to the south by the River Wansbeck. Many inhabitants have a distinctive accent and dialect known as Pitmatic. This varies from the regional dialect known as Geordie.
Nestled in the county of Northumberland, Ashington is a small town with a population of just over 27,000 people. Despite its size, it's a town rich in history and culture, with plenty of things to see and explore.
One of the town's main attractions is the Woodhorn Museum, housed in a former colliery. The museum offers visitors a fascinating insight into the area's coal mining heritage, with exhibitions showcasing the harsh working conditions of miners and the vital role they played in the region's economy.
