Vardzia is a cave monastery site in southern Georgia, excavated from the slopes of the Erusheti Mountain on the left bank of the Kura River, thirty kilometres from Aspindza. The main period of construction was the second half of the twelfth century. The caves stretch along the cliff for some five hundred meters and in up to nineteen tiers. The monastery was an important cultural center, a place of significant literary and artistic work.
Nestled in the southern region of the country, Vardzia is a stunning cave monastery that dates back to the 12th century. It was built during the reign of Queen Tamar, a prominent figure in Georgian history known for her bravery and leadership. Vardzia was created to serve as a fortress to protect the kingdom from invaders, but it also served as a spiritual center for monks and pilgrims.
The monastery is carved into the side of a cliff, overlooking the Mtkvari River, and is made up of nearly 600 rooms and tunnels. As you explore the site, you will come across various chapels, living quarters, and dining halls, all interconnected by narrow pathways and stairs. You will also see beautiful frescoes and intricate carvings that depict scenes from the Bible and Georgian legends.
