Fayence ist die von der italienischen Stadt Faenza abgeleitete französische Bezeichnung für einen Teilbereich kunsthandwerklich hergestellter Keramik. Bei Fayencen handelt es sich um mit offener Porosität gesintertes Irdengut, dessen gelblich-grauer oder rötlicher bis bräunlicher, saugfähiger Scherben mit einer weiß deckenden Glasur überzogen ist. Dabei ist ein wesentlicher Bestandteil der Glasur Zinnfritte. Fayencen sind meist blau oder mehrfarbig bemalt.
