Hermannstadt ist eine Stadt in Rumänien im Kreis Sibiu und zugleich Kreishauptstadt. Sie liegt in der historischen Landschaft Siebenbürgen, ist eines der Zentren der Siebenbürger Sachsen und war 2007 zusammen mit der Stadt Luxemburg Kulturhauptstadt Europas. Die Stadt wurde im 12. Jahrhundert von siebenbürgisch-sächsischen Kolonisten gegründet und trug zunächst den Namen Hermannsdorf. Zuvor war die Stadt auch unter dem deutschen Namen Zibinsburg bekannt. Sibiu/Hermannstadt war ursprünglich eine dakisch-römische Stadt namens Cedonia. Im Jahr 2008 wurde Sibiu/Hermannstadt von Forbes auf Platz 8 der Liste der 10 idyllischsten Orte Europas zum Leben gesetzt. In der Vergangenheit diente Sibiu/Hermannstadt auch zweimal als Hauptstadt des Fürstentums Siebenbürgen, das erste Mal von 1703 bis 1791 und das zweite Mal von 1849 bis 1865.
