Schœlcher is a town and the fourth-largest commune in the French overseas department of Martinique. The town was named Case-Navire until 1889, when it was renamed in honor of French abolitionist writer Victor Schœlcher.
Schœlcher is named after the famous French abolitionist Victor Schœlcher, who played a pivotal role in the abolition of slavery in Martinique. This small town is steeped in history and culture, with numerous monuments and landmarks paying tribute to the island's rich past. One such landmark is the Schœlcher Library, a stunning building designed by Gustave Eiffel (of Eiffel Tower fame) that houses a vast collection of books and artifacts.
For those who love the outdoors, Schœlcher has plenty to offer. The town is situated right on the coast, providing access to some of the island's most picturesque beaches. Anse Madame is a popular spot for swimming and sunbathing, while Anse Turin is perfect for snorkeling and scuba diving. For a more challenging adventure, YOU can hike up to the summit of Mount Pelée, an active volcano that last erupted in 1902.
