Ouidah or Whydah, and known locally as Glexwe, formerly the chief port of the Kingdom of Whydah, is a city on the coast of the Republic of Benin. The commune covers an area of 364 km2 (141 sq mi) and as of 2002 had a population of 76,555 people.
Ouidah is a coastal town located in the southern part of Benin, with a rich history and cultural heritage. It was once a prominent center of the slave trade, and today it serves as a pilgrimage site for many people of African descent who come to connect with their ancestral roots.
One of the main attractions in Ouidah is the Route des Esclaves (Slave Route), a path that leads from the town center to the beach, and commemorates the journey that enslaved people were forced to take from the town to the ships that would take them across the Atlantic. Along the way, you'll see various landmarks and monuments that tell the story of this dark period in history, such as the Door of No Return, where the enslaved were loaded onto the ships, and the Tree of Forgetfulness, where they were forced to drink a potion that was believed to make them forget their past lives and identities.
