Ilha de Itamaracá is a tropical island and municipality in Pernambuco, Brazil on the Atlantic Ocean. Itamaracá means "stone shaker" in Tupi, from the words itá ("stone") and mbara'ká ("shaker"). It is separated from the mainland by the Canal de Santa Cruz, a salt water channel both mouths of which are on the Atlantic Ocean, and is connected to the mainland by a long road bridge.
One of the most popular attractions on the island is Forte Orange, a historic fortress built in the 17th century to protect the island from Dutch invaders. The fortress has now been converted into a museum, where YOU can learn about the island's history and see artifacts from the time of Dutch colonization.
If YOU are looking for a more relaxed day, head to one of the island's many beaches, such as Praia do Sossego or Praia do Forte. These beaches offer crystal clear water and white sand, perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and relaxing.
