Dún Laoghaire is a suburban coastal town on the southside of Dublin, Ireland. It is the administrative centre of the county of Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown. The town was built up alongside a small existing settlement following 1816 legislation that allowed the building of a major port to serve Dublin. It was known as Dunleary in the English language, until it was renamed Kingstown in honour of George IV's 1821 visit, and in 1920 was given its present name, which is the original Irish form from which "Dunleary" was anglicised. Over time, the town became a residential location, a seaside resort, the terminus of Ireland's first railway and the administrative centre of the former borough of Dún Laoghaire, and from 1994, of the county of Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown.
As soon as you arrive in Dun Laoghaire, you'll be struck by its picturesque marina, which is home to a plethora of sailing boats and yachts. The town boasts a rich maritime history, and you'll find plenty of reminders of this as you explore its different areas. Speaking of exploration, Dun Laoghaire is a haven for those who love the great outdoors. From the stunning coastal walks to the beautiful parks, there's no shortage of natural beauty to be discovered here.
One of the most popular attractions in Dun Laoghaire is the famous Pier, which is perfect for a leisurely stroll or cycle. As you wander along the Pier, you'll be treated to breathtaking views of Dublin Bay and the Irish Sea. The Pier is also a great spot for fishing, and you'll often see locals casting their lines into the water in the hope of catching a fresh catch for dinner.
