Die Stadt ist das traditionelle Handelszentrum Japans und heute eines der wichtigsten Industriezentren und einer der bedeutendsten Häfen Japans. Das alte Stadtzentrum von Osaka um Shinsaibashi liegt im Süden, das nördliche Zentrum hat mehr Geschäftscharakter. Die Einwohner Osakas sprechen einen japanischen Dialekt, der Ōsaka-ben genannt wird. Osaka ist zudem als „Küche Japans“ und für seine komödiantische Unterhaltungskunst (Manzai) bekannt.
