Spitak, is a city and urban municipal community in the northern Lori Province of Armenia. It is 96 km (60 mi) north of the capital, Yerevan, and 22 km (14 mi) west of the provincial center, Vanadzor. Spitak was entirely destroyed during the devastating 1988 Armenian earthquake, and it was rebuilt in a slightly different location. Currently, the town has an approximate population of 13,133 as per the 2022 census.
Spitak is known for its stunning natural scenery, with towering mountains and lush forests surrounding the town. The nearby Dzoraget River offers breathtaking views and plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities like hiking and fishing. If you're lucky, you may even spot some of the region's rare wildlife, like the Armenian mouflon or the Caucasian leopard.
But Spitak isn't just a haven for nature enthusiasts. The town is also steeped in history, with several important cultural sites to explore. The Spitakavor Monastery, dating back to the 7th century, is a must-visit for anyone interested in Armenian history and architecture. The 12th-century Kobayr Monastery is another popular attraction, with its beautiful frescoes and stunning views of the surrounding landscape.
